President Knighted Our President, Gillian Thornton, was one of 60 members of the British Guild of Travel Writers who recently visited the Champagne-Ardenne region of France. The local tourist board awarded her the title of Knight of the Saulte-Bouchon Commandery in recognition of the articles she has written on the area. Aside from being given a medal and certificate, the ceremony involved drinking Champagne. Someone's got to do it.
'Quelle week!' VWC member, Mary Woodward won a Guardian competition writing about fashion. These national competitions are fiercely difficult to win. Congratulations to Mary. Her prize was an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris to cover couture fashion week. Life can be tough! Said Mary, 'My 14 year old self admires the dresses, while the rest of me wonders where you could find a good dry -cleaner to entrust one with.' As well as writing an article for the Guardian against the clock, Mary also had to attend loads of parties and accept a designer outfit. Those of you thinking that writing is all angst should think again.
Ex-member in Midlands Nick Michael reports that he has linked up with the Birmingham Cannon Hill Writers' group where he is getting feedback on his off beat Sci Fi thriller. He continues to edit it and hassle agents although he is considering self publishing. He has also pitched into another thriller.
