Verulam Writers' Circle Competitions

These are open to members only, but all are welcome to attend the meetings where the theme and results are announced.

The David Gibson Cup

2006 entry details

Winner 2006

2004 entry details

Winner, 2004

Runner up, 2004

Since its re-discovery in the cupboard of one of the members, the David Gibson Cup has been awarded annually to the best piece of writing on a previously announced subject. Unusually, for a Verulam Writers' Circle competition, the winner is chosen by popular vote rather than by the person who set the competition.
On the night of the adjudication all the entries are read out, the votes cast, and the winner announced.

It's just a pity that the Cup is so hideous that no one actually wants to take it home; the cheque is ample reward. Details are announced in September.
This competition is seen by members as an encouragement to get creative after the summer break - but the Cup is not seen by trophy hunters as anything extra special!

The Lisbeth Phillips Competition

2004 entry details

Winner, 2004

Third place, 2004

Lisbeth Phillips was a former member who wrote cookery books and articles. Details of this competition are announced in October.

The Crystal Decanter Competition

2006 Entry Details

Winner, 2006

Runner up, 2006

2005 Entry Details

Winner, 2005

Runner up, 2005

Unlike the David Gibson Cup, this is a trophy worth winning.

The decanter is held by the winner for a year - unfortunately it does not get presented with any liquid inside it.
The theme is announced in April and the results judged in May. Meanwhile, entrants keep their fingers crossed that the Circle will repent and fill the decanter with the winner's favourite tipple!
